Colonial Challenge Cup

TRACK DAY APRIL 30, 2008

The Colonial Challenge Cup Track Day in April saw another eventful day with over 70 entrants driving cars from all corners of the world and not one made in China. There were a number of new faces from the world of commerce, real estate, construction, aerospace and the professional world (with the possible exception of the legal field).

The day started at 7.00 am with most of the organizers arriving on time. We are still confused how Ben Pettis “lost his way” to the track even though he has instructed at Summit Point for several years. Leslie and her team greeted all the drivers at registration and Tech’ did a great job of inspecting the cars. Although, when presented with the Ariel Atom belonging to Mark Simons, there were some surprised faces. Equally when faced with inspecting Scott Stupay’s Bizzarrini, the Tech’ lads thought it was a Ferrari. You should have seen the Commodore’s face when he was asked if his Morgan was a kit car.

The advanced group was first on track followed by the intermediate group and then the beginners. The beginners group was so large that instructors were in short supply, but in the end they all “got on track”. The photographs tell all; the Lotus leading the Lamborghini; two Aston’s dueling through the Chicane and a Mini Cooper holding its own in front of a pack of faster cars in the shoot. And as for the beautiful Bizzarrini……….

Lunch time saw the return of the CCC Challenge with the best of the best challenging the Canadian Stig (apologies to the BBC’s Top Gear) for the quickest time around the track in a race prepared Mazda Miata. Lawson Wilder held the trophy a loft for a second time thumping the opposition with a 6 second margin (1 min. 43 sec’s) over Michael DeFontes with Canadian Stig a close third. The series will return in September with several challengers determined to remove Wilder from his throne.

The afternoon saw the pace pick up with Ferrari’s jousting with Ford GT’s and a little yellow VW Rabbit on three wheels, but we are glad to say that the day ended without any incidents or prangs as we Brit’s say. The wine and cheese party saw awards presented to Brent Miller who won the Interlam Go Kart Challenge and to the Best Improved Driver, Track Hogg and the Best off Road Excursion. All were received in the same good humor that they were given.

Reggie Broddie thanked all the sponsors and entrants on behalf of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County and the Scholarship Trust and read a moving letter from a student who was able to attend college as a result of the donations made by the Colonial Challenge Cup and its sponsors.

Thank you again to all supporters, entrants, sponsors and helpers.
