History
The Colonial Challenge Cup is an invitational event which originated twenty three years ago when two Englishmen and
an Irishman decided to arrange a friendly boat race against some American friends who were holding forth on their sailing skills.
The first regatta took place in the waters off the town of Oxford, Maryland in the Chesapeake Bay in the autumn of 1986, before moving to St.
Michaels where the tradition continued to 2005.
The Regatta became an event of some notoriety each September in Annapolis when sailors from all points arrived in the City supporting the colors of
their countries. These were not professional sailors, more amateur seafarers who enjoyed the company of others and visiting certain “watering holes” on
the eastern shore. Amidst the fun of competition, the serious side of the Regatta saw the raising of over $130,000 in support of the Boys and Girls Clubs
of Annapolis and Anne Arundel County and the Boys and Girls Clubs Scholarship Trust.
As the saying goes "all good things must come to an end" and in 2006 the annual regatta was replaced by a move from the waters of the Chesapeake to the
tarmac of Summit Point Motorsports Park in Summit Point, West Virginia. Participants drive their own cars under the tutelage of expert instructors and learn
about all aspects of defensive driving, car control and accident avoidance.
We had a most successful Track Day in April at Summit Point and are looking forward towards the next event on September 24.
